Nerone, Roma e la DOMUS AUREA - Eric M. Moormann (Conferenza, 30)
Arbor Sapientiae Editore - Roma, 2020

In this conference, the grotesques discovered in the Golden House pavilion on the Oppius in the late 15th century are discussed as a Renaissance artistic motif and as interpreted by contemporary authors as expressions of fantasia or as inappropriate figures contra naturam. We also investigate whether grotesques belonged to the repertoire of ancient painters, especially those of the Neronian age, for instance, outside the Golden House in Rome and in the Vesuvian cities.

Eric M. Moormann is an emeritus professor of classical archaeology at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. His research includes ancient painting and sculpture, the topography of the Vesuvian cities and Rome, as well as the reception of ancient culture in later ages and the history of archaeology. Currently, he is completing his investigations on the Via Appia as part of the Nijmegen project “Mapping the Via Appia”.
