Questo libro in due volumi ha come principale oggetto di studio le statuette votive che rappresentano adulti con bambini (statuette di donne che allattano o che hanno con sé bambini, e di coppie formate da un uomo e una donna o due donne) provenienti dall’Italia antica (Etruria, Lazio antico, Campania, Magna Grecia e Sicilia). Attraverso l’analisi funzionale di questo materiale, la presente ricerca offre un ventaglio di possibilità sulle dinamiche e sugli agenti che si celano dietro l’atto di offrire oggetti votivi rappresentanti adulti e bambini. Il cuore dell’indagine è l’uso di un tipo specifico di ex-voto per comunicare con entità umane e transumane per dini religiosi e sociali, che verosimilmente va oltre il legame puramente biologico madre-figlio. A questo scopo, sono state prese in onsiderazione diverse variabili: legami biologici, status sociale e altri aspetti culturali, luogo di provenienza (spazi urbani e non urbani), sfera pubblica e privata, tipo di divinità coinvolte ed eventuali rituali messi in atto per onorarle; altri tipi di votivi e iscrizioni presenti nel contesto di ritrovamento delle statuette. Dai risultati ottenuti si può evincere l’importanza della prole per le famiglie e per l’intera comunità e la crescita dei bambini come un’attività condivisa da vari membri della famiglia in senso allargato. I confini tra femminile e maschile, infatti, nell’antichità sembrano essere stati molto più sottili di quanto siamo soliti pensare.
Abstract:
The main object of this two-volume book is votive statuettes of adults with infants from ancient Italy (Etruria, ancient Latium, Campania, Magna Graecia, and Sicily). Some of the votives represent a woman breastfeeding, or holding an infant, others a pair, either a man and a woman or two women. Through the functional analysis of this material, my research offers a range of possibilities on who and/or what lies behind the offering of votives representing adult/s with infant/s. The main focus is the use of these particular ex-votos (votive statuettes of adults with infant/s) to communicate with human and trans-human entities for religious and social purposes; the religious agency probably goes beyond the purely biological mother-child link. The investigation takes numerous variables into account: biological links; social status and other cultural factors; place of provenance (urban and non-urban spaces); public vs. private sphere; types of deity and, if applicable, the rituals performed to honor these last; inscriptions or other kinds of votive linked to the statuettes. The findings clearly reveal both the importance of offspring for families and communities and the multivocal nature of child-rearing. Gender boundaries in Antiquity seem, in fact, to have been much thinner than we used to think.
