With this most recent work, Louis Reekmans continues his investigation of the historical centres of the catacomb of Callixtus on the second floor. After the tomb of Cornelius, following along tunnel D which issues from stairway 1 (or of St. Eusebius according to de Rossi’s terminology), cubicles o10 to o14 contain the remains, identifiable via inscriptions, of Pope Gaius and Eusebius and of the martyrs, Calcerus and Partenius, mentioned in the Depositio Martyrum. A fragmentary inscription allows the confirmation of de Rossi’s presumed location of the tomb of an African bishop, Optatus of Vescera (nowadays Biskra in Algeria). Using the same method as in his previous studies, a scrupulous and detailed analysis of the evidentiary remains, a brief synthesis presents an historical reconstruction of the entire complex. The 33 separate plates clearly illustrate this careful and precise study which is to be recommended to every student of ancient Christianity.
