L’ISCRIZIONE MUSIVA DI M. VECCIUS M.F. NELLE TERME CENTRALI DI AQUINUM

    DI

    DAVID NONNIS

    _____

In the central area of the roman Aquinum (Latium adiectum), the University of Salento is digging since 2009 a huge public bathing building. In 2016 it was discovered - in the male frigidarium - a musive Latin inscription of Augustan age. The inscriptions let us know that the entire balnea were built by an until now unknown local magistrate, M. Veccius M. f., at his own expenses. The text records also two separate sectors, respectively for men (balneum virile) and for women (balneum muliebre), already excavated and identified in the previous years; it mentions a crypta, a palaestra and some undefined ornamenta too. The paper focuses also on the archaeological remains of the entire baths and on prosopography of M. Veccius in the context of Augustan and Julio-Claudian Aquinum.

The Codice Vaticano Latino 1196 (XII century) contains a detailed chronicle of the Translatio corporis beatissimi Marci papae et confessoris: the document allows to follow the historical and geographical stages of the translation of the body of Mark, pontiff only for a little less than nine months in the year 336 and buried in the cemetery basilica erected by the pope himself on the via Ardeatina. From this building (only recently identified) begin the events of the cult of Pope Mark and the endless wanderings of his sacred relics that, between the XI and XII centuries, mainly involve some localities of southern Lazio, giving valuable and concrete information about the settlements and the power assets in central Italy in the Middle Ages.

IL MOSAICO DELLA CASA DI AION A NEA PAPHOS 2. L’EPIFANIA DI DIONISO

    DI

    EUGENIO LA ROCCA

    _____

On one of the panels of a famous mosaic found in the House of Aion in Nea Paphos, the apotheosis of Dionysus, a child seated on Hermes’ lap, is depicted according to an unusual iconographic scheme, which led many exegetes to suppose a reference to the nascent Christian iconography, in the first place the representation of the Mother with the Child, in function of a Dionysus redeemer, pagan antagonist of Christ, and therefore to interpret the scene as a conscious pagan response to 7

Christianity. But such an iconographic scheme that borders on the iconic is widely attested in the pagan environment, from Egypt to Greece to Rome itself. It takes into account one of the most important functions performed by Hermes, not only in the late-antique period, as an emanation of the word of God, and of Dionysus as the Savior, who is destined to reign over the gods after Zeus. Within this interpretation, the mosaic of Nea Paphos, perhaps dependent on a Ptolemaic model, remains entirely consistent with pagan culture. The iconographic similarities with the depictions of the Madonna and Child are much more easily interpreted as dependent, in both cases, on pre-existing models.

RICERCHE ARCHEOLOGICHE ITALO-GRECHE A SKOTOUSSA (TESSAGLIA): PRIMI RISULTATI

    DI

    GIOACCHINO FRANCESCO LA TORRE

    SOPHIA KARAPANOU

    _____

The Skotoussa project is an Italian-Greek collaboration since 2014, directed by Sophia Karapanou and Gioacchino Francesco La Torre. After four years we have obtained very interesting results. From literary sources we know that the city was involved in the main events of the 4 th century 8

B.C. Before our project were known only sporadic objects coming from the area of the city. Now, we are able to trace a firs portrait of the settlement, from the Neolithic to the Meddle Byzantine period. By the topographic study of the fortification wall, we have recognized two circuits: an Archaic one, on top of the acropolis of Kastro, and a Late Classic or Early Hellenistic one, that encircles a large space of about 60 hectares. We have produced a new, more detailed map of the wall. The excavation of the Eastern Gate has revealed, after a long period of abandonment, a Byzantine phase of the Gate. Near the Eastern Gate we are exploring a large Hellenistic public building that dates back to the end of the 4 th century B.C. The building was destroyed in the Early Roman period and never rebuilt. During the excavation have come to light many architectonic fragments and several pieces of marble statues. This is the period of maximum floruit of the city. The city was abandoned in Roma times, but a new settlement, completely unknown before, was founded in the 11 th century AD and reached its floruit between 12 th and 13 th centurIes.

PROVOCATORIE NOVITÀ DAL TEMPIO DI NETTUNO DI PAESTUM

Robert Koldewey, already, questioned the reasons of the special shape of the temple plan with its slightly different column bays on front and sides and with the complicated angle contractions, and he supposed to find some answers in the entablature. During the new exact documentation of the upper parts of the temple in sc. 1:25, however, there were noticed considerable gaps in the coordination of the structuring elements of the entablature – regulae, triglyphs and metopes, mutuli - , together with evident traces of reworking on many elements, especially on the architraves. Before carrying out a new review on the moment itself it remains difficult to establish, if these elements are readapted from a predecessor on the same spot or if they had been dimensioned after a first project of the actual building. Following this latter hypothesis, indeed, one gains valuable indication for a design process in two steps as it was recently demonstrated also for the temple of Zeus at Olympia. In that way a first simple schema of the column arrangement with equal normal bays and simple angle contraction on all sides were modified by many little variations in the coordination and the dimensioning of the single architectural elements with the aim to realize the building volume in harmonious overall proportions in accordance with the conditions set by the preexisting building phase.

SARCOFAGI DI SAN SEBASTIANO AL RESTAURO: DALLE RARITÀ BIBLICHE ALLE IMMAGINI TEOFANICHE

    _____

In 2017, in the systematic recover of the Museum of the TicketOffice of Saint Sebastian, on the Appian Way, was restored a first batch of ten sarcophagi, among the more than 150 preserved in the right side aisle of the circiform basilica built by Constantine to indicate the memory of the Apostles. Among the sarcophagi recovered with the help of the CNR and ENEA, emerge the sarcophagus of Lot and the sarcophagus of Balaam, the first with evident traces of polychromy, the second characterized by very rare biblical scenes, comparable only with the frescoes of the Hypogeum of via Dino Compagni. Even more interesting are the so-called sarcophagus of the “two sisters” and the sarcophagus of “stars and crowns” type, both of the Theodosian age, discovered by Ferrua and Fornari inside two mausoleums annexed to the circiform basilica. The decorations of the two fronts can be compared with the iconographic settings of the most important contemporaries religious buildings: from the Basilica of Santa Pudenziana to that of Santa Sabina, from the basilicas of Cimitile and Fondi by Paulinus of Nola to the chapel of Sant’Aquilino in Milan, from the neapolitan baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte to the mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna.

The reassessment of an Etruscan red-figure stamnos at the Royal Ontario Museum of Toronto leads to its attribution to the Painter of Bonn 83, a relevant figure of the ‘Campanizing Group’ described by John D. Beazley. This attribution is the first step of the analysis in depth of the signature-motifs appearing in the 19 vases attributed to this painter and of their development in the course of the artist’s life. The Toronto stamnos belongs to the youth of the painter and is the only vase marked with an inscription, which records the place of production as belonging to the Saties family. This is attested exclusively in Vulci and known to be the owner of the prestigeous Tomb François, contemporary to the Painter of Bonn 83. It is therefore likely that the painters of the ‘Campanizing Group’ worked in Vulci under the protection of one of the most important gentes of the local élite, which owned the relevant workshop and was probably involved in the reception of immigrant craftsmen from Magna Grecia.

The inscriptions relating the magistrates of the civitas foederata and those of Sullan colony are considered in the background of the relationships between Praeneste and Rome during the Republic; two case studies are treated: the funerary cippus of a probable local magistrate and some inscribed epistyles from the forum area, with names of Praenestine notables and member of the Roman aristocracy.12

Concerning the last decades of Republic and the Empire, the presentation of the main types of magistratual careers in the municipium Praenestinorum is followed by the discussion of two unpublished texts, which confirm the continuous presence of Caesii in the Ancient Latium town.

Although preparation work for the new edition of CIL is still ongoing, we would like to illustrate the results of our research so far. Our examination of Prenestine brick stamps with the names of magistrates has allowed us to expand the dossier of duoviri, aediles and quaestores and to define a chronological order, even if relative, of the stamps dating to a period between the last decades of the II century BC and the Trajan-Hadrian era and to advance ideas, with the presence of new complementary stamps and tituli picti, of different process of production.13

The speaker recalls several remarks he made in the past years about the Shrine of Janus in the Argiletum and the god’s simulacrum hosted in it, in reference to the so-called “urna a palazzetto” (possibly from Chiusi) and the small statue of Culs´ans´ from Cortona. Given the almost total lack of scholarly response, he urges the audience to take his proposals into consideration and express opinions and comments about them.
